How to start a successful Pets blog
Your love for pets can be channeled into something beautiful and creative by blogging. Here’s everything you need to know about creating your blog.
How to Start a Pets Blog
1) Finding your Niche
If you’re feeling inspired to start a pet blog. We’ll assume you have pets or you’re a pet lover, or in one way or the other you’re involved in the welfare of animals. Then that should be your niche, you can write articles or generate content on that.
A lot of people are scared of the legendary blinking cursor or blank screen on their computer (generally known as writers block) this fear shouldn’t stop you from getting started.
This fear can be overcome by discovering your niche and sticking to it. What kind of animals do you fancy, it could be about cats, dogs, awareness on animal welfare, abuse, or you can write about animals in the wild, the list is endless.
You could start with your first post by introducing yourself to the community (i.e. your readers) and give them an idea of the content they should be expecting from you.
The second can be on your inspiration, factors that led to the creation of your pet blog. From there, you can go on and start getting stories on your chosen niche for your pet blog.
2) Think of a unique blog name and create your website
Now comes the fun part, creating your blog name. We suggest a name that’s short, sweet and is relevant to your audience. Some names for a Pet blog could be: Dog bless you, Steph And the Spaniels or if you’re still stuck try using our blog name generator for some inspiration.

The power of social media should not be under estimated for your pets blog, so we advise you take full advantage of it. After coming up with your blog name, the next thing to do is to ensure the corresponding names are available on social media platforms.
As a pets blog owner, would you be posting more of your pet’s pictures? Then Instagram is a good platform to use. If your content would involve more of videos, YouTube is the go to platform.
There are other equipment that would come in handy for your blog, but that would depend solely on the niche you’re blogging about.
A wildlife blogger would need a camera with great lenses, a Wi-Fi dongle and a good PC. A person blogging on service dogs for example would need a lot of photos, so it’s advised you not only have a camera but a good mobile phone with great camera quality to capture unexpected moments
What content do pets bloggers create?
Pet bloggers generally create loads of visual contents like pictures and videos.
Sometimes some blogs write product reviews for pets or how to guides to help you deal with a particular situation e.g. how to stop your dog from chewing everything in sight.
It is important to also have your own voice. Don’t be afraid to dish out your two cents on a particular topic. Be ready to receive all sorts of feedback from your audience which could either be positive or negative.
Your aim is to always engage the viewers or readers. They should be curious enough to know what solution, answer or opinion you seek to provide.
Some other pet bloggers produce amazing and unique pictures on their blog, where they use pictures to paint amazing stories, while others produce regular podcasts on all things that have to do with their niche.
Create engaging and relevant content
The saying “Content is King” cannot be truer. No matter the niche you need to create engaging and unique content for your teeming audience. Getting the content could be a little tedious for a newbie, and this could be a huge disincentive. Here are a few a ways you can garner unique content for your blog.
If you’re good with the camera, and you have a pet subject, devote a lot of time with your subject while taking loads of pictures that may be useful to you. After going through the pictures and selecting the one’s that would suit you best, you could either write a short story on it or highlight the actions behind the pictures.
Asking questions on forums, social media sites and your online community would also go a long way in giving you sources to generate unique content as you get to sample the opinion of various people on a subject.
Going through old posts by others in your niche is another way to generate unique content. If the post is outdated, you can update it and add your opinions to it, e.g. new and effective ways to combat ticks and fleas on your pets.
How to grow your traffic
After creating your pet blog and filling it up with content, definitely you’d want people to read them. One of the best methods of promoting your blog is to engage with others most especially on social media. Read other peoples pet blogs and leave thoughtful and insightful comments.
Join discussion threads on Reddit, Facebook, follow and tweet on trending topics pertaining to your niche on Twitter. Promoting your blog blatantly may be counter intuitive, but insightful comments and great opinions on topics would make people curious about you, hence they can discover your blog through the social media channels you’ve set up.
Guest posting on other peoples blogs is another way of increasing the traffic to your blog. Ensure the blog you’re posting as a guest is established and be sure to read their guidelines carefully so you don’t breach them.
