Wisconsin Business Name Search

Getting Started

When you’re developing your own business, it’s going to need a name that is memorable, relevant and unique. Naturally, there are already many other businesses in existence just within your state. It’s because of this that coming up with a unique name can be a bit tricky.

The Wisconsin Secretary of State website provides naming guidelines for just about every kind of business out there, including common choices like corporations and LLCs.

Here, you’ll be guided through running searches to make sure your business name is one of a kind, and getting started with the process of reserving your name.

Search business name availability

Using the guidelines provided above, y0u can brainstorm some name ideas that suit your business perfectly. It’s a good idea to come up with a few different options that you are satisfied with, because you’re likely to find that some of those names may already be taken.

Once you’ve come up with your list, you can use the Wisconsin Corporate Records Search to look up entity names that are already in existence. When you want to keep it simple, there is also an easy Name Availability search that will keep things simple until you’re ready to take the next step.

Remember that in many cases, these searches are pretty rudimentary. Once you send in your name reservation application, you’ll have a clearer idea about the availability status of the name(s) you choose. If you want to be more certain before you file that application, you can also call or email the SOS Business Services department.

If you’ve come up with a list of different names that can work well for your business, then there’s a good chance you can avoid this issue altogether. However, in some cases you may find that coming up with a unique, suitable name in certain markets may be more difficult.

Odds are, you can go back to the drawing board and come up with something that will work well. However, there can also be some cases in which those creating businesses are set on their chosen name, or something as close as possible to it.

If this is the case for you, then you can contact the SOS office in order to seek out some more options. They will be able to help you out by providing smaller changes you may be able to make, or at least answer questions related to the process.
